Circular Economy Benefits

Our member share days are the best day of the year! Bring us your leaves and yard waste from the end of the season (nothing bigger than one inch by one foot), and come prepared to take home compost.

We ask that you bring your own container to fill up to 10 gallons of screened compost. You can also take as little as you want – maybe even none at all!

Applying compost in the fall helps build soils over winter so you’re ready too plant in the spring. We recommend no more than 1/2″ applied as a top dressing under mulches or directly into lawns and raised beds. If you’ve only got a houseplant (or ten), we’ve got a small share that’s just right for you.

The Backgate Farm is a family owned and operated farm dating back to 1945, tucked right next to the Bike Co-Op. We are incredibly fortunate to operate on this property to help steward the land with regenerative practices.

We use a small portion of the farm to operate our covered aerated static pile system, where we process your food scraps, yard waste and more into high quality soil amendments.

During your visit, one of our team members would be happy to show you the process and answer any questions you may have.

RSVP Required – Compost & Tours

Let’s get you set up. You’ll only need one RSVP per vehicle, and please do not bring pets. The tour is accessible and designed for all ages.

Here’s how it works:

We’ll be hosting members in 20 minute waves from 10 AM to Noon.

FAQ:

I can’t make the date, but I still want compost!

Don’t worry, we will have a makeup day scheduled later in October, TBD.

None of my leaves will have dropped by 10/13.

You can still come to the makeup day later in the month.

I don’t want compost.

That’s perfectly fine, our host farmers will take your share! No need to respond or register, but make sure not to flag this as spam.

I need more compost than 10 gallons.

We can offer a 50% discount on any additional compost for members. Check it out when you pick a time slot in the shop page.

Where is this being held?

Our headquarters at the Backgate Farm on North College. We’ll send directions out the week prior to the event via email.

Can I bring a friend or family?

Absolutely – we just ask that you only bring one vehicle, as space is limited. Please, no pets.
