About Compost Queen PBC

Compost Queen PBC (Public Benefit Corporation) provides composting services across Northern Colorado for homes, businesses, and events. We process all organics materials that we collect through hot composting on small farms in Fort Collins. We are currently seeking to grow our customer base, service area, and service team. 

Our front line operators ensure that food scraps get picked up from customers and help process material on the yard. We’re hiring for up to four days per week, 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Learn More. 

Join us on weekends and occasional special events to educate the public on the circular economy. Must be available 3-4 weekend days per month, May – October. Learn More.

Lead our compost manufacturing operations and keep our equipment in top operating condition. Three to five days per week, 8 AM to 12:30 PM. Learn More. 

Compost Technician Level 1

Compost Queen PBC, an award-winning public benefit corporation based in Fort Collins, is hiring Compost Technicians to join our team up to four days per week. We are on a mission to fight climate change through food waste recycling and soil health. If you enjoy hands-on, outdoor work and want to make an impact in your community, we’d love to meet you.

Position Overview

Compost Technicians are responsible for collecting food scraps from homes and businesses, transporting them safely, and helping process compost at our partner farms. You will “own” a fixed route on the same day(s) each week, driving a company vehicle. This is a physical, outdoor role that requires reliability, attention to detail, and a commitment to sustainability.

Responsibilities

  • Drive a service route for commercial and residential accounts (6–8 hours per shift).

  • Collect, weigh, and record food waste collection units.

  • Safely unload materials at local farm processing sites.

  • Assist with compost processing and quality control.

  • Clean and sanitize buckets.

  • Perform manual decontamination of compost loads.

  • Safely operate tractors and wheel loaders (full training provided).

  • Engage politely with customers and community members.

Requirements

  • Must be 18+ years old.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (no CDL required).

  • Ability to lift and carry 50–75 pounds repeatedly.

  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Availability for up to four weekdays, minimum of two (8:30 AM – 4:30 PM)

  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail.

  • Willingness to work independently and unsupervised.

  • Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.

  • Tolerance of odors and physical labor.

Compensation & Growth

  • Training Period (2-6 routes): $16/hr.

  • Level I Technician: $16.50/hr after training.

  • Compensation evaluation at 90 days and again every 180 days.

  • Compost Technician II (tractor-certified, fully independent): $18/hr.

  • All employees receive complimentary composting service.

  • Safety equipment provided: shirts, high visibility vest, sunscreen, eyewear, ear and head protection.

About the Company:

Compost Queen PBC is a family-owned and operated compost hauling and processing business based in Fort Collins, CO. We market our compost service as well as run a drop off location for community food scraps at local farmers markets.

We have a passion for waste diversion, composting, and contributing to a greener and healthier community throughout Northern Colorado.

If you love to be outside, interact with people and go to Farmers Markets, then this may be the perfect job for you! This position is great for anyone wanting to earn some extra cash this summer while becoming part of our incredible Compost Queen team. The markets are extremely fun and you will meet lots of great people each day while enjoying the Colorado sunshine.

We hire multiple team members for this position so you don’t commit EVERY weekend to the Queen. 

About the Role:

Title: Compost Queen Farmers Market Representative

This a part-time, seasonal employee position

  • You will be responsible for Farmers Markets primarily on Saturdays and Sundays. 
  • You must have availability on most Saturdays or Sundays from 7:30am – 3:30pm, May through October.
  • This is a great opportunity to connect with the local Fort Collins community and contribute to a greener community.
  • This is a seasonal position, starting in May and going through October.
  • You may be the primary representative at the booth, working independently. Busy markets have two team members and occasionally a third.
  • Compensation of $16-18 per hour depending on experience.
 

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Must have the capacity to transport market set-up equipment including a 10’ by 10’ collapsible standup tent, 65 gallon rolling bins, folding tables, weights for tent, and other market materials 
  • Able to guide customers through our website and digital transactions.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs and able to stand at the booth for 6+ hour long shifts
  • Able to set up and break down the market booth before and after the market and during rainy, windy, and other inclement weather conditions
  • Must have a friendly personality and the ability to maintain a positive attitude for a 6+ hour market shift
  • Must be able to make sales of compost services and products to the public efficiently and effectively in a friendly and kind manner
  • Must have a well-groomed and neat appearance
 

Responsibilities:

  • Setting up, operating, and breaking down the Compost Queen booth at farmer’s markets
  • Setting up and managing food waste collection
  • Transporting product, rolling carts, and market materials to and from the headquarters in North Fort Collins and to/from the applicable market
  • Responsible for all products, marketing materials, and drop-off materials
  • Educating customers about Compost Queen and our services
  • Supporting any other sales associates during their market shift
  • Being courteous, friendly, and kind with all customers, team members, other vendors, and market coordinators and staff
  • Completing the inventory and sales summary sheet before the completion of market shift.
  • Communicating by slack, text or call with the business owner about any market needs including (market equipment, product needs, staffing needs, and any other support)
 

Expectations:

  • Arrive to markets with a clean and professional appearance adhering to the dress code standard
  • Arrive on time – picking up supplies and products from headquarters ahead of markets and arriving at markets at least one hour prior to start time
  • Follow operational procedures as documented in operations manual
  • Have a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and to work hard
  • Manage your own breaks and booth coverage during markets

Compost Operations Manager

Position Overview

The Compost Operations Manager is responsible for day-to-day compost manufacturing and yard operations at the Back Gate Farm. You will learn the composting process and how to operate and maintain our equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and maintain compost piles to ensure proper feedstock mix and moisture
  • Operate a front loader to move compost piles in our aerated composting system
  • Use a heated pressure washer to clean and sanitize operating equipment and collection vessels
  • Operate a rotary trommel and conveyor to screen compost
  • Prepare and deliver inventory for sale, including bagged and bulk material
  • Maintain yard aesthetics through basic landscaping
  • Schedule and perform basic equipment maintenance like greasing and DEF
  • Lead team members in compost operations and scheduling
  • Document and forecast compost manufacturing operations based on established methods and processes. 

Requirements

  • Must be 18+ years old.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (no CDL required).
  • Ability to lift and carry 50–75 pounds repeatedly.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Availability for up to five weekdays, minimum of three (8:00 AM – 12:30 PM)
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Willingness to work independently and unsupervised.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  • Tolerance of odors and physical labor.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge
  • Ability to learn and improve Compost Queen standard operating procedure

Compensation & Growth

  • $18 to $23 per hour based on experience and aptitude
  • Compensation evaluation at 90 days.

  • On job training provided – you don’t need to be a composting expert!
